Recent data from the Texas Department of State Health Services shows that lower income communities are being hit hardest by COVID-19. The economic challenges these families face have worsened during this pandemic.
The vast majority of the communities we serve are located in low-income neighborhoods. To help these families during this crisis, we’ve partnered with the Houston Food Bank (HFB) to provide groceries and meals to those who need it most.
We distribute more than 1,100 meals plus snacks daily. These meals are given to all children residing in our apartment communities. We’ve also provided a week’s worth of groceries to over 2,600 families at 15 on-site events within apartment communities in partnership with the HFB Mobile Food Pantry program.
In addition, the pandemic has led to the closure of schools throughout Houston. Many children are isolated at home without access to libraries and other educational activities. Urban Outreach has partnered with Memorial Drive United Methodist Church to host several book fairs in our communities. Children choose their own books to enjoy and can continue developing reading skills.
